LISBON LEMON – ONE OF THE HARDIEST LEMON VARIETIES
Botanical Name: Citrus x limon cultivar “Lisbon Lemon” (Gallego seedling from Portuguese origin)
Description: Produces large, oval elongated fruit with a prominent nipple at the end. The rind is thin, smooth to slightly textured and turns bright yellow when mature. The flesh is greenish yellow, very juicy, and very acidic. It has very few seeds and a strong citrus aroma.
Ripens: Produces fruit and ripens throughout the year with main crop from winter to early spring.
Height & Spread: 5m x 4 m (approximately 16 ft x 13 ft), mainly dependent on pruning practices.
General:
- A strong vigorous grower with dense foliage and thorny branches.
- Upright growing at first, spreading out with age.
- Very productive with large quality lemons.
- More resistant against frost, heat, wind, and drought
- Young trees will need some frost protection until established.
- Once established it can tolerate moderate and even severe frost.
- Can be used as an ornamental shade tree in smaller gardens.
- Can be grown exceptionally well in containers/pots.
Care:
- Very well drained, light aerated soil is essential. Avoid clay soils.
- When planting in pots, ensure that adequate drainage is provided and use a good quality bark based potting soil with added river sand.
- Best fruit production is in full sun but tolerates semi-shade as well.
- Citrus are heavy feeders, so apply 6:1:5 or 20-20-20 fertilizer monthly, or use your choice of organic fertilizer option.
- They will also benefit from regular applications of magnesium sulphate (epsom salts) and iron chelates.
- Keep plants moist but be careful of over watering.
- Keep an eye out for aphids, scale. Mealy bugs and citris pslla (treat with any product containing imadacloprid).
