TAROCCO BLOOD NAVEL ORANGE – SUPER TASTING HEIRLOOM VARIETY!!!
Botanical Name: Citrus x sinensis cultivar “TAROCCO” (A natural mutation discovered from the “Sanguirello” variety, in Sicily region of Italy during the 19th Century)
Description: Bears medium to large sized rounded fruit with smooth, slightly pebbled skin. The rind is semi-thick, and the skin is yellow-orange in color, sometimes blushed over with pinkish red. The soft flesh ranges from dark orange-pink to deep ruby. It has superior sweetness with a distinctive berry-like, juicy taste. It is nearly seedless.
Ripens: From May to mid-June (dependent on local climatic conditions)
Height & Spread: 4m x 4 m (approximately 13 ft x 13 ft), mainly dependent on pruning practices
General:
- Navel oranges have a distinctive round “mini orange” protrusion at the lower end of the fruit. The color intensity of the flesh needs a chilly (but not frosty) winter to develop properly.
- In areas with warm winter months the color of the flesh will be lighter
- It has high concentration of Vitamin C, than other oranges. Exceptionally good for juicing & fresh eating. It is only moderately productive, but the fruits last long on the tree.
- Suited for frost free areas only. It will tolerate light to moderate frost when established and planted in a protected area
- Produces fragrant white flowers in summer. Can be used as an ornamental shade tree in smaller gardens
- Grows exceptionally well in containers
Care:
- Very well drained, light aerated soil is essential. Avoid clay soils.
- When planting in pots, ensure that adequate drainage is provided and use a good quality bark based potting soil with added river sand. Best fruit production is in full sun but tolerates semi-shade as well.
- Citrus are heavy feeders, so apply 6:1:5 or 20-20-20 fertilizer monthly, or use your choice of organic fertilizer option.
- They will also benefit from regular applications of magnesium sulphate (epsom salts) and iron chelates.
- Keep plants moist but be careful of over watering.
- Keep an eye out for aphids, scale. Mealy bugs and citris pslla (treat with any product containing imadacloprid).
