BEARSS LEMON – THE QUICKEST BEARING LEMON VARIETY
Botanical Name: Citrus × latifolia ‘Bearss’” (This cultivar was selected in the Bearss grove near Lutz, Florida in 1952. The parent tree is said to have been planted in 1892. They are believed to originate in Italy.)
Description: Produces larger lemons than other varieties, oval shaped lemons with smooth thin skin. True lemon tree with very juicy, acidic, and high lemon oil in its peel. They turn yellow when fully ripe.
Ripens: Produces fruit and ripens throughout the year with main crop from late summer into spring.
Height & Spread: 4m x 4 m (approximately 13 ft x 13 ft), mainly dependent on pruning practices. When potted average height is between 6 ft to 8 ft.
General:
• A strong vigorous grower. Evergreen with fewer thorns than other lemon
varieties.
• Small plant, perfect for indoor containers.
• The trees are vigorous, thorny and very sensitive to cold!
• Heavy bearer with fruit present most of the year.
• Bearss Lemons outproduce both Eureka and Lisbon
• Highly recommended variety and easy to grow.
• Can be used as an ornamental shade tree in smaller gardens.
Care:
• Very well drained, light aerated soil is essential. Avoid clay soils.
• When planting in pots, ensure that adequate drainage is provided and use a good quality bark based potting soil with added river sand.
• Best fruit production is in full sun but tolerates semi-shade as well.
• Citrus are heavy feeders, so apply 6:1:5 or 20-20-20 fertilizer monthly, or use your choice of organic fertilizer option.
• They will also benefit from regular applications of magnesium sulphate (epsom salts) and iron chelates.
• Keep plants moist but be careful of over watering.
• Keep an eye out for aphids, scale. Mealy bugs and citris pslla (treat with any product containing imadacloprid).
