This red Romaine lettuce is 10″ in width and 12″ in height. The long, crunchy spoon-shaped leaves give salads a lovely hue. In about 40 days, it will be ready. Despite being called for its use in papal gardens, Romaine lettuce has been around since the third millennium BC, when it was portrayed in bas-reliefs by the ancient Egyptians. Romaine’s other name, “Cos,” reflects another aspect of its past on the Greek island of Kos. Since they utilized lettuce as a spoon in their traditional cooking, Syrian gardeners later started carefully breeding this variety of lettuce to have strong ribs and a spoon-like shape.

Because lettuce thrives in cool climates, the soil should be between 35 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Red romaine lettuce seeds should be directly sown in full sun and good soil, spaced as thinly as possible in rows 1-2′ apart. Once the seedlings start to grow, space them 10-12″ apart.
